Office Chair Made from Recycled Fishing Nets
Humanscale, a design and manufacturing company that specializes in developing ergonomic products for modern offices, has come out with a new recycled invention that will change the way you think of office chairs. The Smart Ocean chair is made of recycled fishing net materials and represents a fantastically innovative way to use recycled materials to produce new useful products.
About Smart Ocean
Smart Ocean is an updated version of the Diffrient Smart Task chair created by Humanscale, but conversely, was developed with a heavy focus on sustainability. Humanscale incorporates two pounds of recycled fishing net into each chair, which is sourced from the ocean plastic pollution reduction-driven company, Bureo. The chair might look like an ordinary chair in terms of design, but the recycled material this brilliant invention includes not only helps the environment but also cleverly targets the increasing amount of green-minded consumers.
About Bureo
Bureo – the company Humanscale sources their innovative recycled materials from for their ingenious recycled invention – also creates skateboards from recycled fishnets retrieved from the coast of Chile. They essentially transform plastic fishing nets into pellets that can be used to manufacture various products. MAKO hopes to see more designers come out with new invention ideas like this that help protect the planet’s natural ecosystems.
Why Fishing Nets?
Surprisingly, fishing nets comprise roughly 10% of all plastic pollution found in the ocean today. Every year, thousands of marine animals are harmed by ocean plastic pollution, such as abandoned plastic fishing nets or six-pack rings.
Unfortunately, nets can survive for years after they are discarded, which basically means they can end up unintentionally trapping marine wildlife, birds, and fish, in turn killing them.
Setting An Example in Product Design
Humanscale’s overarching goal is to achieve a net positive impact on the environment, and their efforts have been acknowledged, as evidenced by their achievement of the first-ever Living Product Challenge certification.
Their business model constitutes an inspiring framework for manufacturers that will hopefully serve as motivation for companies to create products that give back to the environment. Especially given the increasing prevalence of environmentally-conscious consumers, we can only expect to see more recycled invention ideas like the Smart Ocean chair.
